George Washington Farewell Address

George Washington, the first president of the United States of America, gave a farewell address back in 1796. Normally, you would think that the George Washington farewell address was delivered in public, as a speech by the great president. It was not. The George Washington farewell address was actually simply published through The Independent Chronicle in the year of 1796, when he was about to step down from office after successfully completing a second term. His address has been a common topic for critiques and analysis. Here are just some of the points raised in his address:

• George Washington chose to step down and did not wish to run for a third term. As a Republican, he believed that people like him should not stay in office longer than what the people wanted. He encouraged the people to elect his successor.
• He also advised that America should remain solid and unified in the face of external forces despite having conflicts internally. George emphasized the unity of the regions and how each one can help support each other, like the North and the South, the East and the West. He strongly advises the formation of political parties because of these “regions” as it can rip a country apart.
• George Washington also warns that these internal conflicts can render America vulnerable to external attacks and that he only stressed further the importance of a United America amidst adversities.
• He also warned that America should not take sides in matters of external affairs. America should not take sides as it can only “bring forth evil.”
• The latter part of his address speaks about how he hopes that his achievements in the 45 years of service he rendered to the country far outweigh the mistakes that he has committed.
• Lastly, he hoped that Americans will continue to share the same love and patriotism he had for the country under a government that is democratic and free.

Many are in the opinion that the George Washington farewell address cannot be more fitting in honoring a great soldier and a great leader of a great nation.

George Washington wrote the final draft of his address himself before handing it over to The Independent Chronicle for publishing. If you wish to get a copy of the full farewell address, it can be obtained from the National Archives. They even have the final draft in George Washington's own handwriting.
